Lucy Liu Recalls Bill Murray Confrontation on 'Charlie's Angels' Set (2)

Before Kill Bill, Lucy Liu had her big-screen breakout in Charlie's Angels, a 2000 action film that also starred Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. Additionally, Bill Murray played a supporting role in the remake of the original television series as John Bosley. The Ghostbusters actor has been the subject of on-set misconduct allegations over the past few years, while past collaborators are now coming out with stories of their own. Liu is the latest former co-star to recall a story of a confrontation with Murray, this time for "inexcusable language" while filming Charlie's Angels.

During an interview with The Guardian, Liu discussed the long-rumored story about her on-set dispute with Murray while filming Charlie's Angels. Liu had previously said that her co-star used language that “was inexcusable and unacceptable," prompting her to respond strongly to his transgressions. The actress does not go into detail on exactly what was said, but it's clear she did not take Murray's actions lightly. Despite being an up-and-coming actress, Liu didn't hesitate to call out his behavior and protect herself and others.

“I really didn’t think about it. I would have done that in any situation. I think when I sense something is not right, I am going to protect myself. It’s an innate thing to do if you feel there’s injustice, and I always feel that way.”

Of course, Liu was likely not the only person involved with Charlie's Angels who found it difficult working with Murray. Not only did he not return for the sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, but his confrontation with Liu has been a story swirling around industry circles for over 20 years. According to a crew member, Murray wrote new script pages for the film out of nowhere during production, and gave crew members a copy of the new screenplay. While everyone, including the director, McG, was confused, Liu told Murray that what he did was "way out of line." In response, Murray said, "I don't know what you're complaining about. I gave you more lines. I mean... look who you're in with here. You're TV... and this is the big league." Liu promptly responded with "F*** you, you f****** c***sucker!"

Bill Murray's Previous On-Set Misconduct Allegation

In 2022, Billy Murray was accused of sexually harassing a female crew member during the production of Aziz Ansari's Being Mortal. According to the original report, Murray straddled the much younger female production assistant and proceeded to kiss her through his COVID-19-mandated mask. He settled the lawsuit, paying the victim $100,000. Later that year, Murray himself responded to the allegations, commenting on his own actions and about the then-suspended filming of Being Mortal.

“I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way. The company, the movie studio, wanted to do the right thing, so they wanted to check it all out, investigate it. and so they stopped the production. But as of now, we’re talking and we’re trying to make peace with each other. I think that’s where the real issue is, between our peace. We’re both professionals. We like each other’s work. We like each other, I think, and if you can’t really get along and trust each other, there’s no point in going further working together or making a movie as well."

Lucy Liu Shares Honest but Disappointing View on Charlie's Angels Sequel Chances

Lucy Liu is the latest Charlie's Angels star to share her thoughts on a sequel, but she is not quite as interested as others.

When the allegations made headlines, it was reported that Searchlight Pictures and Ansari were looking for ways to resume production after filming half of the movie. However, Being Mortal has been shelved indefinitely until director Aziz Ansari revisits the movie and rewrites it completely to remove Bill Murray's role. It's unclear if Being Mortal will ever see the light of day, but one thing is growing clearer — Lucy Liu had a point.
